I don’t think I’ve ever made sloppy joe sandwiches before. I’m not particularly fond of “processed” meat dishes like meatloaf, meatballs, sloppy joes, etc, but I started to hunger for them after seeing this and this.

I used the recipe from here but changed things just a skosh to fit the ingredients I had.
1 T olive oil
1/2 large onion, minced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 t chili powder
1 lb lean ground (grass-fed) beef
1/4 t salt
1/4 t black pepper, fresh cracked
1 t sugar
1 14-oz can of diced tomatoes, pureed with a stick blender
1/2 c ketchup
1/8 t cayenne pepper
Saute onion and garlic in the oil until the onion has browned slightly. Add the chili powder, beef, salt, pepper, and sugar. Break the beef up until it is crumbly and stir until barely pink. Add the tomato puree, ketchup, and cayenne pepper. If it seems thick, add a little water. Simmer on medium heat until everything is hot and the beef is cooked through. Serve on hot toasted buns.
I really liked this. It sort of reminded me of awful elementary school cafeteria food, except it was good. Matt hates sloppy joes but ate 1 anyway because it was easier than making his own dinner.

I made sloppy joes for the first time a few weeks ago. I wanted something different with ground turkey other than turkey burgers. I used a cooking light recipe that called for most of the ingredients you list, plus a dash of worcestershire sauce. Then I added a glug of bbq sauce for good measure. I was impressed at how much they reminded me of grade school but were actually healthy!

Comment by diana 05.07.07 @ 11:00 amOh yum! I’ve always loved sloppy joes but nothing I’ve ever made has compared to school lunch sloppy joes. I’ll have to give this recipe a try. Thank you!

Comment by AuntieAnn 05.07.07 @ 1:56 pmI love sloppy joes! Homemade ones only, but I do love them. Looks good, maybe I should make some . . .
Comment by Wanda 05.07.07 @ 6:36 pmYummm, that looks good, I have a secret craving for bad processed foods, SPAM, sloppy joes, vienna sausages, weird huh?
Comment by Bea 05.08.07 @ 3:11 pmWhat?! you can make sloppy joes without the Lowry dry package mix stuff?! Another recipe I’m going to have to try. Thanks.
Comment by z's momma 05.08.07 @ 5:55 pmSloppy Joes are great! Love em.
But then again, there’s not too many foods that I don’t like….. :)
